여기, 우리 모두가 살고 있는 공간을 은유하는 화택(火宅)이 있다. 대칭 구조로 된 2층 가정집은 그 모양이 불 화(火)가 아래위로 두 개씩 놓인 활활 타오르는 불모양 일(燚)자와 닮았다.
항상 역동적인 움직임 속에 있고 어디로든 이동할 수 있는 불은 문화적 배경이나 맥락에 따라 수많은 의미 사이를 횡단한다. 변화와 재생, 진리와 이성, 기운과 에너지, 정화와 희생, 신성함과 순결, 노동과 기술, 열정과 욕망, 파괴와 위험 등이 그것이다. 불의 다채로움을 탐색하는 이 전시에서 우리는 시각적으로 현란한 붉은 화염(火焰) 대신, 뜨겁게 달구어진 불판의 은박지 위로 당신을 초대한다.
발화부터 소화까지,
인류 최초의 불부터 인류세의 불기운(火氣)까지,
태양의 불부터 숨어있는 에너지로서의 불까지,
쓰레기 소각장의 불부터 성령의 신성한 불까지,
공동체를 있게 한 모닥불부터 화마(火魔)로서의 불까지,
자연의 불에서 인간의 불까지,
언제나 상승하는 시각적인 불에서 귀로 듣는 불까지,
불이 훑고 지나간 살결에서부터 존재의 소멸까지...
이곳은 불의 미학이 사정없이 교차, 횡단하는 공간으로, 헤스티아와 조왕할매가 살고 있기도 하고, 몽상하는 탐험가들이 살아 숨쉬고 있는 미로이기도 하며, 누군가에게는 서둘러 탈출해야 하는 삼계화택이기도 하다.
Welcome to ‘Hwatek’ (火宅), the burning house. Here, the exhibition takes place in a former two storey house whose symmetrical floor plan coincidently resembles the Chinese character ‘ ’ (‘il’). This character, which means, “flame-like”, is composed of four characters for fire, 火 (‘hwa’). Originating from buddhist philosophy, the burning house

From combustion to extinguishment,
From humanity’s first spark to the
Anthropocene’s energy of fire,
From the smoldering sun to fire as invisible energy,
From the fire of the incinerator to the divine fire of the Holy Spirit,
From the flames of communion to the flames of destruction,
From the fire of nature to the fire of humans,
From the fire that we can see to the fire as we can hear,
From the flesh that fire has swept through to the extinction of existence
This is a space where the aesthetics of fire crisscross without reserve, where Hestia and Jowanghalmae (grandmother deity of fire) reside, a maze where daydreaming adventurers live and breathe, and for some, a burning house that one must seek to escape.
